In a quiet seaside village lives Xiaokui, a lively and energetic little girl with many dreams. She longs to play with her friends, and she also hopes to help her mother, Hongju, perform Maoqiang Opera. After Xiaokui’s father went missing at sea, Hongju has had to shoulder the burden of supporting the family alone. Her brightest moments come when she steps onto the stage as a Maoqiang performer. But now, with fewer and fewer people interested in traditional opera and Xiaokui falling ill, their lives are suddenly thrown into turmoil. Although the film portrays moments of inevitable pain and loss, its true theme is resilience—how we recover and find strength after such hardships.Like the balloons floating around the village, carrying wishes for those who sail out to sea to return safely, suffering is ever-present in their lives, yet so are their heartfelt hopes for one another’s happiness. Blue Sea is a poetic, neo-realist romantic and heartwarming film, filled with this spirit of kindness and grace.
