Logline

A trans teenage swimmer training for state championships must navigate a team that doesn't fully accept her, a coach who does, and a relay race that requires all four of them to choose.

Synopsis

MAYA, 16, transitioned two years ago and joined the swim team at her new school because it was the one place her body felt like it made sense. Her times qualify her for the state relay team. The other three relay members — including CARA, who was Maya's best friend before she transitioned and hasn't spoken to her since — will have to decide whether winning matters more than whatever they've decided to be afraid of. RELAY is a 75-minute coming-of-age drama being made with a cast of mostly first-time actors, a crew of 8, and a shooting schedule of 18 days. The script was a finalist for the Humanitas Prize. The campaign covers production entirely; distribution will be pursued independently through film festival submission and LGBTQ+ community screening networks.
