A veteran DEA handler discovers that the cartel informant she has protected for a decade has been feeding the agency false intelligence — and that her own supervisors knew.
RENATA VASQUEZ, 48, has spent twenty years building informant networks in northern Mexico. Her most valuable asset — code name PELICAN — has provided intelligence leading to 34 major seizures and kept the DEA's regional success metrics green for a decade. When a rival analyst submits a forensic audit showing that every seizure PELICAN pointed to was sacrificial — cartel product being cleared to make room for a larger pipeline — Renata does not believe it. Then she starts checking. NORTHERN ROUTE is a procedural thriller about institutional capture: the way a bureaucracy can be trained to protect a lie by making the truth look like incompetence. It is also a character study of a woman whose professional identity is inseparable from the work that may have caused more harm than good.
