Logline

A Chinese-American rancher in 1880s Wyoming fights a land grab by the railroad — and the erasure of the community her family built — while her estranged son rides back into town as a hired gun for the other side.

Synopsis

MEI CALLOWAY, 58, came to Wyoming as a labor contractor during the railroad boom, married a Shoshone rancher, and spent thirty years building Calloway Station — a small town populated by Chinese, Indigenous, and Black families pushed to the margins of manifest destiny. When the railroad returns with surveyors and lawyers, Mei's son THOMAS, 32, arrives as their enforcement agent: a man who shed every identity his mother gave him and built a new one from violence and distance. YELLOW RIVER ROAD is a revisionist western about the communities that built the American West and the historical project of making them invisible. It is also a mother-and-son story that neither character knows they are having.
