A blind portrait photographer and the refugee translator assigned to her discover that seeing someone clearly has nothing to do with sight.
NINA CROSS, 34, lost her sight to a degenerative condition at 26 — eight years after establishing herself as one of New York's most sought-after portrait photographers. She never stopped shooting. Using a custom audio-feedback rig and her unnerving instinct for human presence, she still books editorial clients who either respect her or want the press story. DAWIT TESFAYE, 29, arrived in the US from Eritrea two years ago and works as a freelance translator and cultural liaison for an NGO that placed Nina with a community portrait project in the Bronx. They are supposed to produce a book together. Instead they produce a fight, then a friendship, then something neither has a word for in either of their languages. BORROWED LIGHT is a quiet, specific love story about what we offer when we offer ourselves, and what we protect by staying hidden.
